One of the most frightening things I have ever read was an article from ‘The Atlantic’ current issue. My fear arises from the fact we have just held a presidential election that will affect our nation’s future.
The article is long and complex, but vitally important. It is full of alarming information and carefully researched by a respected historian, Timothy W. Ryback, dated January 08, 2025. There are perhaps few who would have patience to read the entire article but I wish to call it to attention because of its importance.
The title is: ‘How Hitler Dismantled A Democracy in 53 Days.’
It begins: “Ninety-two years ago this month, on January 30, 1933 Adolf Hitler was appointed the 15thchancellor of the Weimar Republic. . . . (he) set about destroying a constitutional republic through constitutional means.” . . . “What follows is a step-by-step account of how Hitler systematically disabled and then dismantled his country’s democratic structures and processes in less than two months’ time—specifically, one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours, and 40 minutes.“ The author goes on to describe just how it happened.
It is long and detailed; the author tells of Hitler’s many promises and lies; and describes the steps Hitler took to achieve his end. Pay attention and listen to the echo we hear coming from our newly elected president. He speaks of ‘shaking up’ our democracy and he has said, ‘I need the kind of generals Hitler had.’
